So you're not shopping on Thanksgiving?

I applaud you.  It must take a lot of guts to repost a picture taking a stand against shopping.  But let me tell you something; Walmart is not trolling Facebook, looking at your photos.  Target did not see your picture and think, "well, I guess we should change our plans."

Since you feel so bad for those workers, maybe on Thanksgiving you should also consider not getting robbed or sick, and don't even think about starting a fire with that beautiful turkey.  In fact maybe you shouldn't use your oven at all, just in case.  Then firefighters and paramedics can have the day off as well.  Doctors, nurses, policemen; they can all spend the whole day with their families.

Now I know, comparing people working to save our lives with those who are just obligated to sell us this year's hottest toy is very different.  But at the core they are all the same, they are all people.  What about the people who work in theaters so you can go to the Holiday premiere of your favorite movie?  I don't see anyone having a problem with that.  Or the hotel and restaurant workers there to support you when you visit family or burn your turkey?  Do we really care about the employees?  Or do we just jump at the opportunity to take a stand and follow the crowd?  Now what about this one, how many of you are also willing to not watch your team's Thanksgiving football game?  Do you know how many employees work Thanksgiving to make that game possible? (Hint: A LOT)

If you must take a stand, then take a stand.  Don't sit on your butt and post a picture. You're not changing anything that way.  If you believe in something that strongly, FIGHT for it.  Contact the companies, boycott on more than Thanksgiving Day (contrary to what you believe, they don't NEED your business on Thanksgiving, there are plenty of greedy people who will still be out shopping.)  Don't just take a stand against retail, boycott movie theaters and other unnecessary places that are open. Don't watch any football games, and definitely don't go to the game.

Do I think that anything will change?  No.  When it comes down to it our nation doesn't actually care about employees having the day off.  We care about entertainment and the money.  We care about comfort and being catered to.  We make a big deal about these individuals here, yet don't say a thing about the ones who make it possible to see our annual movie or go out for our yearly thanksgiving brunch.  We don't care about people who work so that we can sit in front of the tv for hours.  We're very selective in our fights.

So what do I propose?  If nothing is going to change, can we do anything?  Probably not.  But what if instead of staying home, we went to the stores.  What if we were there to be a smiling face, thanking the employees for working.  If we braved the crowds to give everyone working a thanksgiving card.  If all the people who value Thanksgiving are at home boycotting, who does that leave the workers to deal with?  The greedy (I know not EVERYONE shopping will be rude and greedy, but that's not the point) people who won't care a lick about the employees they are dealing with.  It's not going to be fun for them, so why can't we go cheer people up instead of just pouting that stores are open on Thanksgiving?  Leave generous tips at restaurants, or stores that allow it (stores can't regulate you leaving cards and cash on cars in the employee parking area, fyi.)  If we care about employees that have to work, lets show them we care.

For those of you who have friends and family who have to work, remember Thanksgiving isn't about the day.  Be lenient, modify your Thanksgiving plans so they can be a part of it too.  Get up earlier, so you can have dinner before they have to work.  Celebrate the day before or after.  Make it work, because you are thankful and you don't need a specific day to express that.

Let's spend less time boycotting corporations, and more time giving THANKS to the people who really matter.

First Giveaway!

You know what my favorite thing is? (Okay, maybe not my favorite but it's up there.)

Free stuff.

I don't care what it is, I just love me some free.

And in honor of me loving free stuff, I decided to provide one of you with the best free thing of them all.  Money!!

My birthday is November 1, and in honor of that I want to give something to you!  One of you will be the lucky winner of $23 that I will send via Paypal. (You must have a paypal account to receive your prize.)

Why such a random number you ask?  Actually, you've probably figured it out.  I like to think I only have brilliant people reading my blog.  Yes, I will be turning 23.  Some people get depressed when they age, and I know some of you will claim that I'll think differently when I get older, but I honestly do not mind my age.  So what if I'm getting older?  I'm still the same me and I still like the same things.  Even if I was turning 33 or 83... Who am I to gripe because life happened as it's supposed to?  Maybe that's just me. =P

Anyways, without further ado, use the rafflecopter widget below to win one glorious dollar for every year of my life.  The giveaway ends on my birthday-- November 1, 2013.  Sorry other awesome countries, but this giveaway is only available in the US.

Rachael Ray Pan Miracles

I recently came across this post via pinterest.

Then I remembered my favorite pan.

It's sadly had some issues over the past few years and has gotten pretty dirty on it's bum.

I figured it wouldn't hurt to try out the baking soda thing, so I had at it!

I started doing it exactly like in the blog I posted, then realized that wouldn't work as the baking soda and peroxide kept running down the side.  I decided to instead mix the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste and rubbed that on all the dirty spots on the pan.

I let it sit for about an hour (I got impatient, okay?) and then started scrubbing it off, pouring on some peroxided down paste as I went.  I don't know if that was helpful or not, but it made me feel epic.

Annnd... it worked!  I had to be a little careful on the bottom edge where the sides meet the bottom because I found if I scrubbed too much and too hard, it started rubbing off the finish, but I didn't have that problem on the rest of the pan.  After I scrubbed it all off, I rinsed it off and that was that!

It's not quite perfect, I might do it one more time to finish it off, but overall I'm so happy about it.  Those marks have been on this pan for a couple years, it feels good to have a sparkly pan again!

*Review* Holiday Inn Bloomington South (Minnesota)

I'm going to start doing some reviews on the samples and deals I get so if that's not your thing, move right along.

A couple nights ago my roomie and I took and overnight trip to the cities (read: Minneapolis area if you're not from around here) for her *gasp* 26th birthday!

We found our hotel per usual on hotwire.com and ended up with a room at Holiday Inn - Bloomington Airport South- Mall Area.

I contacted the Assistant General Manager (he was the contact email I found for the hotel) a few days before my stay to ask if they could maybe put a card or something in the room to make it special for roomie's birthday.  He replied promptly saying they could definitely do something, and then contacted me the morning of to see if we were okay with a poolside room.

When I checked in, the lady at the front desk was very helpful and seemed super happy about having us there for a birthday. We walk into the room after we're checked in... to balloons!!  There were three bouquets of balloons around the room as well as a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" banner.  The staff also all signed a card and included a coupon for a free pizza and 2-liter soda from the attached Green Mill.  It was perfect!

The room was clean and relatively spacious, there was a little bistro table and two chairs right outside the doors to the pool area.  They had a shuttle running to and from the Mall of America that we took advantage of-- was nice to not worry about parking or traffic.

We only had a couple minor beefs with the hotel.  The first was that the tub was pretty dated, which wasn't a huge deal and I read on a review site that they were actually updating them through the fall.  The other issue was that the pool was stinkin' cold!  Again, not a huge deal and we were easily able to warm up in the hot tub.

I would definitely recommend this hotel based on customer service alone, they were awesome!  Especially since I didn't intentionally book their hotel, I booked a random however many star hotel (I can't remember) and didn't see what it was until I paid.  The fact that they were still so accommodating was awesome to me.

I highly recommend if you're ever at any hotel for a special occasion to let them know.  The worst that can happen is you won't get anything extra, but I'm sure any hotel will at least wish you a great birthday, anniversary, etc. when you check in and make you feel extra special!

Thank you Erne and thank you Holiday Inn for a great stay!

What about you guys, do you have any hotels you recommend or always like staying at? Is there something special a hotel has done for you?  Let me know in the comments!
